Dear Colleagues,
Today, we expect media coverage regarding legal proceedings involving UHealth and we want to share information with you. Yesterday, the federal court in Miami unsealed lawsuits that were filed against UHealth, and relate allegations, in some instances, from well over a decade ago. Since those lawsuits were filed in 2013, UHealth has fully cooperated with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) in its investigation. UHealth has reached a tentative agreement with the DOJ to resolve three of the claims made in the complaints. UHealth has made no admission of wrongdoing.
The three claims UHealth intends to settle stem from certain past administrative practices, including billing notices at its outpatient clinics and lab testing protocols at its transplant center. UHealth’s best-in-class quality of care was never in question. Over the past several years the University has devoted substantial resources to increasing its regulatory and billing compliance program and implemented enhanced governance measures throughout the health system.
We hope to finalize the settlement agreement with the DOJ in the coming weeks.
We are pleased to look toward resolving this matter while we continue to care for the South Florida community during this challenging time.
We also recognize that this news may create additional interest from the media. Should you receive a media inquiry, please direct the inquiry to Lisa Worley at lworley2@med.miami.edu.
