Below, for your reference, is the full text of this video message from Rudy Fernandez, senior vice president for public affairs and communications and chief of staff to the president, to the University of Miami community.
For more than eight months, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the lives of everyone in our community; many of our friends, co-workers, and neighbors have been hit especially hard.
During this difficult period, I am reminded of the importance of gratitude. My family and I have been fortunate as we weather these unprecedented times.
But that is not the reality in many households across our community. We must do our part to help those in need.
Prior to COVID-19, five out of ten households in Miami-Dade County were living in, or were just one emergency away from, poverty. The pandemic has exacerbated this already challenging situation.
Today, the United Way of Miami-Dade continues to support these families by providing emergency assistance and relief during the coronavirus pandemic.
The University of Miami has supported the United Way for more than 40 years, and this year our support is more important than ever.
As this year’s chair of the United Way’s UM campaign, I ask you to join me today in helping our community’s most vulnerable residents.
I ask you to think about our Miami-Dade community, think of all those who have lost loved ones, have lost their businesses and their jobs.
For every unrestricted $1 you give, the United Way doubles its impact by supporting nearly 100 innovative programs and initiatives focused on education, financial stability, and health—the building blocks for a good life.
Things may look different, but in true ’Canes spirit, we have made great strides in the face of adversity.
I know we are all doing our best to juggle our various responsibilities and commitments.
Please join me with your gift today to continue to give children, at-risk youth, veterans, older adults, and so many of our friends and neighbors a fighting chance for a better tomorrow.
There’s no better time than now to make an impact.
We are one U. |
