When we announced our plans to hold in-person commencement ceremonies at Hard Rock Stadium, we were cautiously optimistic that efforts to contain the coronavirus pandemic would make doing so possible. However, as evidenced by official data, the numbers of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths from COVID-19 continue to rise across the United States, including in Florida.
Therefore, all December 2020 commencement ceremonies for all degrees and all schools/colleges—including the special ceremonies for Spring 2020 graduates—will take place virtually on the same days and times originally announced.
We did not arrive at this decision lightly. Yet, as we have done from the outset of the pandemic, we made it a priority to safeguard the health and well-being of our fellow ’Canes, their loved ones, and surrounding communities.
Our team worked tirelessly with public health experts from UHealth and the stadium’s staff to develop and prepare to implement necessary safety protocols for an in-person gathering. Unfortunately, the rising case counts, and other concerning data points, suggest that we are in the midst of another spike in infections. Therefore, traveling, especially by air, runs counter to current recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
We know this news is disheartening. Both as president of the U, and as the father of a 2020 graduate, I had looked forward to observing this rite of passage with all of you in person later this month. Please know that in no way does a virtual ceremony diminish your accomplishments nor the deep pride we feel for all that you have done to arrive at this important milestone. Furthermore, since from the outset we have been mindful of the uncertainty surrounding any pandemic, we had developed contingency plans to be ready for a seamless switch to a virtual format, should that be necessary. Among other measures, we invested in an IT platform that will allow for a meaningful experience.
The Office of Commencement will share more information regarding how to access the live virtual ceremony in the coming days. Please continue to visit commencement.miami.edu for the latest information.
Now more than ever, we look forward to celebrating your resilience in the pursuit of your life goals. We are grateful for your commitment to your education, your flexibility, and your understanding. |
