You are cordially invited to the naming of the Student Services Building in honor of in honor of Harold Long Jr., B.A. ’68, J.D. ’71  and  H.T. Smith Jr., J.D. ’73. RSVP Harold Long Jr., who is being honored posthumously, founded the United Black Students organization at the University of Miami. One of the first African Americans to graduate from the University of Miami School of Law, he was a member of the Citizens Board and a lifelong champion for the rights of underrepresented students at the University and underserved communities throughout South Florida.  H.T. Smith Jr. has been a member of the University of Miami Board of Trustees since 2004, serving in various leadership positions, including vice chair from 2016 to 2019. He has mentored countless students, leaders, and attorneys in South Florida throughout a stellar legal career and holds the distinction of being Miami-Dade County’s first Black assistant public defender and assistant county attorney.   The naming of this state-of-the-art building for the longtime friends and colleagues who practiced law together is a milestone, marking the first time in University history that a building will be named for accomplished Black alumni. Honoring them with the naming of a resource so central to our mission and our campus reflects the University’s ambition to lead the educational revolution by providing an experience that has belonging and justice at its core.
