Dear University of Miami Student,

While South Florida was only minimally affected by Hurricane Ian, we know much of the West Coast and Central Florida are without power and are having significant flooding issues. We sincerely hope that you and your family did not suffer personally and that everyone is safe. If you or your family have been impacted by this storm, we want you to know that we are here for you.

In the immediate aftermath of a hurricane, it is impossible to know how many students' lives may have been interrupted and in what ways. From experience, we know students encounter family crises, interruption of plans, and bear certain responsibilities that can be challenging. If you or your family have been affected by the storm and you are in need of assistance, please utilize the resources below:

  1. The Dean of Students Office is an important resource for students in need of additional assistance including students having difficulties due to the effects of Hurricane Ian. For assistance, call 305-284-5353.

  2. The Counseling Center offers confidential counseling and crisis intervention services for all students. Students can make an appointment or call after-hours to speak with a mental health professional at 305-284-5511 (24/7).

  3. The Chaplains Association provides a variety of support services for all students. For more information, call 305-284-8118.

  4. The University Ombudsperson helps students navigate difficult situations and connect them to campus resources. If you are having difficulties but are unsure of what to do, give us a call at 305-284-4922.

If you or someone you know has been affected, please do not hesitate to reach out. You can contact me directly at 305-284-4922 or email vpsa@miami.edu. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by the storm.

Warm regards,

Patricia A. Whitely, Ed.D.
