Dear University Community,
Please join me in wishing the very best to John Quelch, admirable leader of the Miami Herbert Business School since he took the helm on July 1, 2017, who has informed me he is stepping down effective Dec. 31.
During his tenure as dean of Miami Herbert and vice provost for executive education, Dean Quelch has left an indelible mark on the school, implementing numerous initiatives to raise its profile and reputation, and overseeing the transformational gift from Patti and Allan Herbert that resulted in the renaming of the school in their honor.
The University has benefited from the experience and insight of a renowned scholar who has held academic leadership positions at prestigious institutions here and abroad. He has served as the Charles Edward Wilson Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School; professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health; and served as dean of the China Europe International Business School and dean of the London Business School.
At the U, Dean Quelch has been responsible for:
- Renewing Miami Herbert’s AACSB accreditation and securing for the first-time both EQUIS and AMBA accreditations, making Miami Herbert only the third business school in the United States to achieve this distinction.
- Launching a first-in-the-nation STEM-certified Master of Science degree in Sustainable Business and securing LEED Gold certification for the operations and maintenance of Miami Herbert buildings.
- Overseeing a redesign of the two-year MBA program and increasing the number of Miami Herbert STEM-certified master’s programs.
- Developing an executive education unit offering custom-designed programs for companies, which was ranked No. 5 in the United States in 2022 by the Financial Times.
- Launching five interdisciplinary research clusters, recruiting 28 tenured and tenure-track faculty, and advancing the worldwide research ranking of the school.
When Dean Quelch joined us, he committed to a five-year term as dean, which he has completed in remarkable fashion. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an author, serves on several corporate boards, and in 2011 Dean Quelch—British by birth—was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
In the coming weeks, I look forward to consulting with the faculty and other key stakeholders on plans for a transition and the search for a new dean.
