To Our University of Miami Community,
Each day following Hurricane Ian’s landfall on the west coast of Florida, we are learning more details about the extent of destruction caused by the storm. Among those impacted are members of our own University of Miami family. We immediately checked on employees and students that live in the affected areas. While we are grateful that they are physically well, it has become clear that the magnitude of the catastrophe is having broader impact on their lives.
Unfortunately, some are coping with the loss of their homes, transportation, and personal possessions, not to mention the devastation to the community, including family and friends.
For those of you who have suffered damage from Hurricane Ian, we are sorry you are going through this hardship. Be assured that your University of Miami family is here for you, and we have mobilized resources, including those listed below, to help you during this time.
Hurricane Ian Emergency Relief Fund: The Emergency Relief Fund program can be a much-needed lifeline during this time. It offers financial assistance to the University of Miami faculty and staff members who have experienced financial hardship because of Hurricane Ian. Access the online application.
Time away to care for yourself and your family members: Any employee requiring time off because of Hurricane Ian may file for a Personal Leave of Absence. Your HR partner can assist in filling out the appropriate paperwork, so you can focus on your family and rebuilding your home.
Faculty and Staff Assistance Program: Going through an event like Hurricane Ian can be traumatic, regardless of what was lost in the storm. The Faculty Staff and Assistance Program is available to everyone, and offers many helpful resources. We encourage you to utilize this benefit.
Make a gift to support your fellow ’Canes: At a time when we see so much destruction, we realize that many faculty and staff members want to help their colleagues as well as our students. If you wish to help those that have been impacted by the storm, access the emergency fund website.
We would like to acknowledge faculty and staff members at UHealth for continuing to serve the community in the affected areas and assist in the recovery effort.
The cleanup and rebuilding effort will require months, and maybe years, of work and patience. The University of Miami will continue to stand with you and provide resources and support as needed. We also will continue to provide updates and share details with you as more information becomes available.
’Canes care for ’Canes. Thank you for providing support and community to those in our University of Miami family who need it the most. |
