To the University of Miami Community,
The devastation and humanitarian crisis unleashed by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria are powerful reminders of our shared vulnerability to disasters which can devastate individuals, families, and communities across the globe.
We at the University of Miami offer our solidarity to those in the impacted regions and to those on our campuses affected by the tragedy. Nearly 30 students from Turkey and Syria are enrolled at the University, and 27 faculty members hail from the two countries. The University of Miami will continue to stand with them and provide support as needed, including access to the resources mentioned in the message sent by the Student Affairs team yesterday.
The human spirit has the capacity to endure, recover, and innovate in the face of adversity. Many in Turkey and Syria are demonstrating that spirit now. Where possible, our faculty in relevant areas of expertise will offer assistance as the region looks to recover and rebuild.
As a community, we can also provide our assistance to the people in Turkey and Syria through charitable giving to one of the many organizations providing relief, such as the AKUT Search and Rescue Association, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and
Doctors without Borders.
Thank you for your support to those suffering in the face of this natural disaster. Let us demonstrate, once more, the spirit of solidarity that underlies the strength of our ’Canes community. |
