Dear ’Canes Family,
I am saddened to share that Esperanza de Varona, a Cuban American librarian and archivist who helped create the University of Miami Libraries’ Cuban Heritage Collection, passed away yesterday in her home in Miami surrounded by family.
Esperanza’s career at the University of Miami spanned 45 years, during which she worked tirelessly alongside her colleagues at the University of Miami Library to collect documents, posters, newspapers, maps, books, and anything that had to do with Cuba and the Cuban exile experience.
It was her vision and leadership that led to the founding of the Cuban Heritage Collection, which, today, is the largest and most comprehensive collection of Cuban ephemera outside the island.
Esperanza was passionate about the preservation of Cuban cultural heritage. Her legacy, which is now one of the most internationally recognized archives in the world, will endure and continue to be enjoyed for many years to come.
Please join me in keeping her family in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
