Dear Fellow 'Canes,
It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you of the death of Brooke Roth, a first-year student majoring in elementary education. Brooke passed away suddenly Saturday morning, March 11, from complications related to a preexisting medical condition.
From Lido Beach, New York, Brooke was a warm and kind-hearted person. Brooke’s friends noted that she was consistently positive, even through difficult times. Her motto was “I’m just happy to be here.” She was a comforting friend, an incredible listener, and made everyone happier just with her presence. Brooke loved being at the University of Miami and had a strong kinship with her fellow floormates of Mahoney Residential College—6th floor. Brooke had so much love for the people around her and always saw the best in others.
Brooke loved kids and was very excited to pursue a career in elementary education. She was a bright, excellent student who had a passion for teaching, earning a 4.0. Her comments in class reflected how much thought and consideration she gave to her studies and her delivery was unmatched by her high level of confidence and analytical ability. At the same time, Brooke was incredibly empathetic and skilled at understanding the complexities of diverse points of view. She was also involved in Camp Kesem, an organization that supports children as they work to understand and cope with a parent’s cancer diagnosis.
Our hearts go out to Brooke’s family and her many friends during this difficult time. We will hold a gathering in Brooke’s honor on March 20 at 8 p.m. in Mahoney Senior Faculty Apartment, MRC 129.
We recognize that many of you are away from campus this week but know the
