Dear University Community,
Following the announcement last week regarding the upcoming plans of our esteemed colleague Jeffrey Duerk, I am delighted to announce that Dr. Guillermo “Willy” Prado has agreed to serve as Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs beginning July 1, 2023, tasked with maintaining a focus on continuous improvement across our schools and colleges and enhancing the reputation of our academic programs.
Dr. Prado is a recognized researcher on adolescent health and prevention, who was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) in 2021. His research has appeared in over 190 peer-reviewed articles and chapters. He has been principal investigator, co-principal investigator, or mentor on more than $100 million of NIH funding and at present leads two NIH R01 grants totaling $7 million.
A proud double ’Cane, Dr. Prado earned his Ph.D. in epidemiology and public health in 2005 and his Master of Science in statistics in 2000. He joined the University as a faculty member in 2007. In 2011, he founded the Division of Prevention Science and Community Health at the Department of Public Health Sciences in the Miller School of Medicine. In this role, he was responsible for hiring faculty and for developing two graduate programs in prevention science. Since 2016, he has served as the Dean of the Graduate School, overseeing the institution’s more than 200 doctoral and master’s degrees and all postdoctoral matters at the University. He was appointed as Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs in 2020. Beyond his research and current administrative roles at the University, Dr. Prado is
Professor of Nursing and Health Studies, Public Health Sciences, and Psychology at the University of Miami.
As a researcher, Dr. Prado broadly focuses on the development, evaluation, and dissemination of parenting interventions for Hispanic youth and their families. In addition to being one of eight UM faculty who are current members of the NAM, he is past President of the Society for Prevention Research; a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the Academies of Science, Medicine, and Engineering of Florida; and a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of Research!America, the country’s largest not-for-profit alliance committed to making health research a higher national priority. He is also the recipient of awards from the Florida Education Fund for his commitment to graduate students of color and from the Society for Prevention Research, Society
for Research on Adolescence, and the National Hispanic Science Network for his contributions to adolescent health.
Dr. Prado will work closely with Provost Jeff Duerk, CEO Joe Echevarria, and me to ensure a smooth transition for our division of Academic Affairs. Please join me in once again thanking Dr. Duerk for his service to the University of Miami as provost and congratulating Dr. Prado for taking on this new role.
