Dear University of Miami community,
We are delighted to announce that internationally renowned nurse researcher Hudson Santos, who currently serves as Vice Dean of Research Affairs at the University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies, will be the school’s next Dean, effective June 1, 2024.
Dean Santos joined the University of Miami faculty in May 2022 as a tenured Professor and the inaugural Dolores J. Chambreau Endowed Chair. Since then, he has demonstrated his commitment to effective leadership, serving as Acting Director of the PhD in Nursing Science Program, as well as Interim Associate Dean of the Graduate School, in addition to his role as Professor and Vice Dean. Thanks in part to his leadership, our School of Nursing and Health Studies has risen dramatically in national rankings—from 24th to 16th in NIH funding—nearly doubling its research footprint from $3,396,294 in FY ’22 to $6,061,945 in FY ’23.
Prior to his tenure at UM, Dean Santos completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Duke University, then earned tenure as an associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing, where he was the Beerstecher-Blackwell Distinguished Term Scholar, director of the Biobehavioral Laboratory, and founder and director of the Health Resilience and Omics Science (HEROS) Hub for identifying genetic risk factors affecting the neurodevelopment of children. He currently serves as President of the International Society of Nurses in Genetics and is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, where serves as Chair-Elect of the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS) National Advisory Council.
Dean Santos is an expert in the social determinants of health who has authored more than 110 scientific publications, securing upwards of $47,000,000 in research funding as a principal investigator or co-investigator. His recent achievements include leading the largest research grant ever awarded to our Coral Gables Campus—a $23,570,000, 7-year NIH grant funding the Miami Cohort of the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Program.
Beyond his own impressive research portfolio, Dean Santos excels at mentoring fellow researchers and graduate students. He is passionate about cultivating a collaborative excellence-focused environment where colleagues can thrive and contribute to the mission of advancing healthcare through education, research, and service.
We extend our gratitude to the search committee for its diligence in securing a candidate whose vision for the School and enthusiasm for preparing the next generation of healthcare leaders stands to be transformative. Dean Santos is well equipped to build on the strong foundation laid by current Dean Cindy Munro as our School of Nursing and Health Studies continues its upward trajectory.
Please join us in congratulating Dean Santos on his new role and thanking Dean Munro for her many contributions to a world class School of Nursing and Health Studies at the U.
