Dear University Community,
Yesterday, the world experienced a significantly challenging event with the CrowdStrike outage, disrupting numerous organizations globally, including the University of Miami and UHealth – University of Miami Health System. At approximately 1 a.m. ET, CrowdStrike conducted a routine, planned software maintenance update. This update included a logic error, which caused Microsoft Windows computers and servers to crash and display a blue screen and impacted all organizations using CrowdStrike software around the world. CrowdStrike confirmed that this is not the result of a cybersecurity incident and quickly deployed a fix for the outage.
Our University of Miami Information Technology (UMIT) team worked rapidly to identify, contain, stabilize and recover our systems. The swift actions of our UMIT team minimized the impact of the CrowdStrike error on the University. In collaboration with teams across the University, downtime protocols were executed and worked as intended. By 6 a.m., our key enterprise systems were restored; by 9 a.m., nearly 99% of our servers were online and more than 95% of our computers were fully operational; and now all University managed servers and applications are restored, and a small number of PCs are still being remediated. While some of our technology partners continue experiencing intermittent issues during their systems recovery, which may impact full functionality across the University, our
systems are stable, and operations are business as usual. UMIT will continue to monitor activity over the weekend and respond accordingly.
This incident pressure tested our ability to respond in real-time, which teams throughout the University accomplished successfully. The cooperation from every area across the University was crucial in restoring our systems promptly and minimizing any disruptions. Through all of this, we continued to serve those who need us most – our community.
