To the University of Miami Community,
As organizations across the country evaluate their practices and resources in light of a new federal administration and an evolving regulatory landscape, the University of Miami remains committed to excellence, and proud of the diverse and talented scholars and professionals who fulfill our mission of education, research, and patient care each day.
External circumstances may shift, but our focus has long been on delivering results and having a positive impact on each other and on those around us. In fact, since 2018 when the University’s Board of Trustees approved our strategic plan, the University—one of the most diverse campuses in the nation—made a commitment to moving beyond the raw numbers of “diversity” and working towards what we have referred to as a culture of belonging, where all members of our community are valued and have the opportunity to add value.
While recent news may have drawn attention to a reorientation of websites and materials that reflect our evolution and the dynamic environment in which we operate, much of this work began years ago, as we sought to operationalize the values we hold dear in our ongoing pursuit of excellence. Belonging at the U is strengthened through open dialogue, reward and recognition, wellbeing, civility, and service to all. Our commitment to our mission and to each other reflects our responsibility as a private institution with a public- serving mission, and a journey we have been on together for quite some time.
Our culture allows campus constituencies to feel more deeply connected to our mission and accountable for the results we achieve. As we strive together in service to our greater community, we foster a caring and engaged environment across our campuses, respectful of all people and open to a variety of views. Only in such an environment can the honest and transparent discourse that underlies excellence truly thrive. These values are a core part of who we are as Miami Hurricanes.
Our care for the people in our community is evident in our steadfast support of all of our students, patients, faculty and staff. There remains much work to be done. But our commitment is absolute and the services our students rely on for success remain available.
The University fully supports the entire community of world-class students, educators, researchers, clinicians, and dedicated administrative staff, whose talents reach into neighborhoods across the globe. Our alumni— from our most recent graduating classes to those who graced our campuses decades ago—are evidence of how striving for excellence opens doors for people from all walks of life.
As our President, the first University of Miami alumnus to serve in the role, often reminds us: diversity is a fact, inclusiveness is a choice, fairness is a principle, and belonging is the outcome. In short, our excellence is fueled by the strengths and experiences of each individual connected to the U. We are reminded of the message our President & CEO, our Faculty Senate Chair, and our Board Chair used to open this academic year—we, each one of us, are the U. |
