Dear University of Miami Community,
We are pleased to announce that Professor Ben Kirtman, a renowned atmospheric scientist, has been selected as the next dean of the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science.
After an extensive search and deliberative interview process, it became clear that both as an accomplished researcher and as a leader trusted by our faculty, Dr. Kirtman is ready to take the helm of our Virginia Key campus. He will assume his new role on Aug. 1.
Dr. Kirtman joined the University of Miami in 2007, and during his 18 years at the Rosenstiel School has focused on pioneering scientific and research areas such as weather predictability, hurricane tracking, and climate variability. He has forged critical relationships with NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and currently serves as director of the Rosenstiel School’s NOAA Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS), which collaborates with 10 partner universities to provide research opportunities, educational training, and outreach to students and postdoctoral scientists involved in NOAA-funded research.
Dr. Kirtman—who received his bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from the University of California San Diego and his master’s and doctoral degrees in meteorology and physical oceanography from the University of Maryland College Park—also serves as deputy director of the University’s Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing (IDSC), where he is director of its Earth Systems Science program. In 2023, he was named the inaugural William R. Middelthon III Endowed Chair of Earth Sciences. In addition, he was elected as a fellow of the American Meteorological Society in 2018 and in 2023 as a fellow of the American Geophysical Union.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Kirtman on his new role and in thanking outgoing Dean Roni Avissar, himself an internationally recognized scientist, for his dedicated service leading the Rosenstiel School since 2009. We look forward to working closely with Dr. Kirtman as he continues to build on excellence.
