Dear University of Miami Community,
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Matt Serletic, B.M. ’92, M.M. ’94, as dean of the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, effective October 19. A two-time alumnus, accomplished musician, GRAMMY Award-winning producer and experienced executive, his selection comes at an important time for the Frost School as it builds on its long tradition of artistic and academic excellence. While at the University, Matt studied trombone performance, developing the musicianship and artistic foundation that have informed every stage of his distinguished career.
Throughout his career, Matt has distinguished himself as a musician, producer, entrepreneur and industry leader, building a career that spans performance, recording, production and executive leadership. In addition to earning GRAMMY Awards for Record and Album of the Year and being named Billboard Producer of the Year, he has produced recordings for acclaimed artists including Matchbox Twenty, Santana, Rob Thomas and Willie Nelson. Most recently, as director of AI Innovation at Amazon Music, he led a global team focused on artificial intelligence and personalization. Previously, as a director of product at Google, he oversaw a global team responsible for creative content for Search. Earlier, he served as chairman and chief executive officer at Virgin Records America.
Matt's connection to the University extends back to his years as a Frost student, and he has remained actively engaged with the school throughout his professional life. Since 2018, he has served on the Frost School Dean's Advisory Committee, contributing to discussions related to curriculum, fundraising priorities and student career preparation. He has also returned to campus as a guest lecturer and was awarded the Frost School of Music Centennial Medal.
Following a national search, Matt emerged as the candidate whose artistic achievement, industry experience, technological perspective and longstanding commitment to the Frost School and the University will guide the school's continued growth and strategic priorities. We are confident he will build on the Frost School’s many strengths by fostering artistic innovation, strengthening connections with the broader creative industries and preparing students to thrive in a rapidly evolving music landscape.
We are grateful to Shelton G. ‘Shelly’ Berg for his nearly two decades of leadership at the Frost School of Music. During his tenure, he cultivated programs, partnerships and relationships that expanded the school’s reach and reputation and contributed to its prominence and distinction. His musical and visionary contributions have left a lasting mark on the University of Miami.
We would like to thank Serona Elton for providing steady interim leadership throughout this transition over the past year. Her stewardship ensured continuity for the school during this period. We also want to recognize the members of the search committee for the time, care and thoughtfulness they brought to this important process.
